Corinne Cantrill was born in 1928, Arthur Cantrill in 1938, both in Sydney, Australia.
They were educated at Fort Street Girls’ High School and Sydney Boys’ High School, respectively.
1954-65: •Arthur Cantrill worked in puppetry at the Clovelly Puppet Theatre (unpaid), and was active in the Puppetry Guild of NSW, being elected as a Vice-President in 1960. He and Corinne Cantrill worked at the childrens’ creative leisure centres of the Childrens’ Library and Crafts Movement (later renamed The Childrens’ Creative Leisure Movement), in Sydney. Arthur Cantrill directed the Movement’s Clovelly Puppet Theatre for one year and participated in production of films on child art and crafts made by the Movement for ABCTV, and devised and presented three schools telecasts on puppetry for ABCTV in 1959.
Corinne Cantrill set up the Queensland Division of the Movement in Brisbane, and Arthur Cantrill moved to Brisbane in 1959 to assist her.
Arthur Cantrill was engaged first as Film Cutter/Splicer, then Film Editor with ABCTV in Brisbane, finally in charge of Film Editing Section, until 1965.
In Brisbane, A. & C. Cantrill made a series of eleven, ten-minute films on child art and crafts for the Movement which were shown on ABCTV. Two series, The Odyssey (Homer’s epic using shadow puppets) and Kip and David (with a puppet bush elf), and then the experimental films Mud, Kinegraffiti, Galaxy, Nebulae and the five Robert Klippel – Junk Sculpture studies, as well as a half-hour childrens’ film, Zoo, with an animated sequence, were all shown on ABCTV.
